ARTIST BIO

Michael Smith is a Brisbane-based contemporary performer and choreographer who seeks to interrogate the human condition. To date his practice has encompassed contemporary dance, dance-theatre, site-specific performance, film and installation. 

 

Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours, First Class - Dance Performance in 2014 from Queensland University of Technology (QUT). His honours project 'Planets', created with interactive visual artist Andy Bates, has since exhibited and performed at the Ars Electronica Festival (Austria), Japan Media Arts Festival, Sunshine Coast Arts Prize, South Bank's 'Flowstate', Jungle Love Music Festival and QUT's Robotronica. 

 

Michael is currently an artist with The Farm, a Gold Coast based dance-theatre company under the artistic direction of Gavin Webber and Grayson Millwood. He has also performed for companies and organisations such as STRUT Dance, WA (DecaDance by Ohad Naharin) and Opera Australia (King Roger directed by Kasper Hotlen and Matthew Barclay). 

 

As a freelance performer, Michael has worked with independent choreographers including Liesel Zink, Cass Mortimer-Eipper, Paul Selwyn Norton, Jack Ziesing and Robert Crispe, Matt Cornell (Dirty Feet), Lizzie and Zaimon Vilmanis (Prying Eye), Nerida Matthaei (Phluxus2), Gareth Belling (Collusion Music and Dance), Melissa Lanham (LJ Projects) Guy Shomroni and Yaniv Abraham, Amalia Pica (IMA), Vanessa Mafe-Keane, Courtney Scheu, Liz Lea and understudied for Lisa Wilson's 'Wireless. 

 

As an emerging choreographer, Michael's choreographic interests have led him to create a solo work 'COWBOY, supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and produced by The Farm. 'COWBOY' has been developed and performed at The Angry Mime (2017), South Bank Corporations 'Flowstate' (2018), The FarmHouse Residency (2018), Dance Massive Open Studios (2019). In 2019 'COWBOY' also toured to Berlin (TanzZiet), and Spain (AGITART Dance Festival). To support his growing choreographic practice, Michael received the Brisbane City Council's Lord Mayors Fellowship (2019/2020).
